You’re actually supposed to trim back the basil in order to stimulate new growth.
It gets woody and stops producing if not kept up with. I read somewhere you’re supposed to snip the flowers off since that is the goal of the plant. Once it has flowers and continues to grow it has done its job basically so if you want it to continue to produce you need to prune it.
